4 Barz - 2050 Something Mixtape Review

Mixtape starts with a thank you message to the fans for getting the CD and for having promoted 4Barz music for the time they’ve been in the game. The intro also thanks God for having brought them this far with their music.

Then begins the madness…

A class session to teach the listener what 4Barz is. The team got quite creative with that segment I must say, all the members showing that team spirit. That’s what this mixtape is all about to me: Team Spirit.

The songs in this mixtape are all pretty creative. Well mixed by the executive producer, Jt Jay, with well thought out vocal effects. Start with track 2 (4 Barz In This) with Kapella, Greg, Jt Jay and Taffie. A good show of lyrical ability by all the rappers at the same time showing their togetherness as a team.

Hurt Locker (Track 3) is a pretty awesome track too, making a statement to anyone asking about KP’s missing in action for some time: “Maybe its because I’ve been tryna get my grades up, get your weight up coz I’m back…” A whole lot of shout outs are laid on this track to all supporters of the 4Barz team to show appreciation. It feels good for NewMusicAlert to have got a shout on that too…

Hit song “Charlie Sheen” is on the tape too, featuring Kapella, Jt Jay and Taffie and superb production by PlayMakr. This one’s had its good share of airplay on radio stations in Nairobi.

As always, there’s something for the ladies brought in by “Spectacular” At the same time, I interpreted this a little differently especially after the second verse. Your take…

2050 Something took a turn to reach out to the basketball community with the “B Ballerz” (Track 12) song that featured Jokka, an anthem released during the AND 1 tournament held in Nairobi.

And the controversy strikes…Burn Zigi (Track 13) The diss track directed to Kenyan mzuka style artist “Bamzigi” If you’ve listen to the track, then you probably know why the track was released. Maybe this can give you an idea:

“In 09 I did 254, a year later this n**** did 254. Mizuka, and my mixtape is 2050 Something, apparently your mixtape is 3050 Something”

I was also really impressed by a new addition to the 4Barz team, Kimo Sabe. The kid’s got a hell of a flow, featuring in 4 of the mixtape’s tracks. I was particularly impressed by “Pull Up” (Track 16) which has got a great flow all about Pulling Up (you probably want to get the mixtape if you didn’t get what I just said)

Nairobi needs its dose of positive music, or rather, MWAPI (Music With A Positive Influence) and KP and his team made sure to do their part on this. I’m not sure why this track got no airplay but I still think it deserves some. “Umenihata” (Track 15), a full Swahili song, talks about a lady who wants men but only for their money. Each artist featured on this song brings the lady ‘back to earth,’ stating that they wouldn’t want anything to do with her, of course due to the risk of HIV and its relations.

The mixtape ends on a high note with another show of lyrical ability by both Kapella and Kimo Sabe. “Follow Through: Barz on Barz” produced by GnX Music (Grand n Xclusive) has no hook and is basically just ‘Barz on Barz’ with a sang ending by the lead singer, Greg.

All in all, 2050 Something is a great mixtape showing great lyrical ability and creativity by 4 Barz and also as I said before, the team spirit. There’s a whole lot of shout outs on a lot of the songs as Kapella shows out to the listeners who he rolls with and shines together with. It’s a great package to have and keep, with quality production by Jt Jay, Bari Bonds, GnX and PlayMakr, and all original music.

The in-between tracks such as “For The Music,” “Blaka!,” “Hii Ni Swag,” “Hustle,” “Rise,” amongst others are also not to be missed, completing the whole package that is 2050 Something.
